Preventing, recognising and responding to heat illness and cold injury in people who work in extreme temperatures.
You will learn to
- Recognise heat illness, from heat rash and cramps to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and cold injury: hypothermia, frostbite and trench foot.
- Understand the risk factors: new or unacclimatised workers, heavy work, heavy PPE, humidity, wind, wet clothing and poor rest.
- Apply prevention: water, rest and shade, acclimatisation plans, work and rest cycles, layered dry clothing and warm breaks.
- Give first aid: cool a heat stroke casualty fast while emergency help is called; move a cold casualty somewhere warm and dry, and never rub frostbitten skin.
- Run the emergency response: buddy checks, raising the alarm and the site emergency procedure.
